The Wall

WELCOME TO THE SB CLIMBING SOCIETY

The Sutton Bonington Campus is lucky enough to have its own bouldering wall. Designed with the help of students, and run entirely by students, it’s a great asset to the climbing community who study at SB.

Although only in an old squash court, our wall still manages to provide a large variety of climbs, with positive and negative gradients, and even a ‘cave’ to allow for some more dramatic bouldering.  Student session leaders open up the wall regularly, with training sessions held by our more experienced members every Tuesday and Thursday and Session Leaders opening the wall at any point during Sports Hall opening times. The routes are updated regularly by our top route setters and professionals too!

Funding for the wall is shared between the Student Union, Sports Hall, UoN Health and Safety Department and Private Society Funds. This means we often have the required financial backing to do what we want. This allowed us to recently replace and improve our safety matting, as well as allowing us to install a strength training corner with wide-grip chin-up bars and a Beastmaker fingerboard.

But with SB Climbing you won’t just be bouldering at our wall on campus. You will also have the opportunity to go bouldering at one of the best indoor walls in the country - Loughborough Climbing Station and Derby Climbing Unit. Our weekly trips have been running for several years and provide a greater variety of climbing to our members, as well as the opportunity to get more involved with the wider climbing community. We offer weekly training sessions with their professionals every Wednesday afternoon.

When the weather is nicer, we also run trips out to the Peak District and other outdoor areas for the chance to boulder on real rock. Again, all these trips are entirely organised and run by students, but safety is always our main concern. We are lucky enough to have a large number of portable crash mats to reduce the chance of injury dramatically.

Along with bouldering, which is currently the majority of the climbing we do, we are starting to increase the amount of top-rope and sport climbing done within the club. This has always been something the society has wanted to do, and we are looking to open up all options to everyone.

If you want to get involved and join us, please visit our students' union page to join - only £10 for the year!
